Hands-on ceramics class for adults 55 and over at the Tampa Museum of Art, part of the Studio 55 vitality arts programme.
Ceramics Continued Study is back at the Tampa Museum of Art on Tuesday, October 27, from 10 AM to 1 PM. It's part of Studio 55, the museum's arts program for adults 55 and over, which is funded by E.A. Michelson Philanthropy.
This isn't a one-off workshop. You can sign up for a single session to finish a project you started somewhere else, or commit to several and work with the instructor to plan them out. You'll have your choice between hand-building and wheel-thrown ceramics, so you can stick to what you like or try something new. Some experience with clay is recommended, and the session is geared toward the beginner-intermediate level, with instructor assistance on hand to help you through. Firing costs, essential tools, and glazes are all included in the price, though you'll need to buy your clay separately in the studio.
There's a bit more to Studio 55 than just the pottery. The program is part of the Vitality Arts Project, launched in 2022 by the Minneapolis-based E.A. Michelson Philanthropy to reshape how museums connect with older adults. It responds to a 2021 report from the American Alliance of Museums, Museums and Creative Aging: A Healthful Partnership, which urged museums to promote creative aging and address ageism. The hands-on workshops are led by teaching artists and are designed to improve health and well-being while fostering new connections among older adults—a group research shows can benefit from arts and culture engagement.
