Historian and author Dr. John Wright Sr. discusses his book 'Carondelet' and the history of the Carondelet neighborhood at the Field House Museum.
Dr. John Wright Sr. is coming to The Field House Museum on Sunday, October 25, to talk about his book Carondelet and the history of one of St. Louis' oldest neighborhoods. It's an author talk in the truest sense: Wright will be there in person, discussing the research and the stories that make up the book.
Carondelet is a neighborhood that's been around since long before the city grew into what it is now, and its history is built on a particular kind of diversity. It was home to a large African American population alongside Irish, German, and Italian immigrants—groups that lived side by side and whose stories the community still works to preserve. That's the thread Wright pulls on throughout the book, looking at how these different lives overlapped in one corner of the city.
Wright is a historian, a Fulbright Scholar, and an educator, and this isn't his only project. His writing ranges from studies of some of St. Louis' most storied neighborhoods to detailed collections of African American history, so Carondelet fits right into the work he's been doing for years. If you've ever spent time in the neighborhood or wondered about the people who built it, this is a good chance to hear it from someone who's spent the time digging into the records.

The venue itself adds a bit to the occasion. The Field House Museum is a National Historic Landmark, a City of St. Louis Landmark, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and it houses the Eugene Field Library. The talk runs from 1 PM to 2 PM on Sunday, October 25, and it's free, with limited availability in person and on Zoom. You'll need to make a reservation in advance.
