Throne of Blood

Harbour Lights Picturehouse is screening Throne of Blood on Sunday 13 September, starting at 17:30. It's Akira Kurosawa's reimagining of Shakespeare's Scottish play, Macbeth, transposed to a Japanese setting. Toshiro Mifune plays the lead samurai, spurred on by his wife and by spirits to murder his best friend and then his master. Kurosawa keeps the barest plot and the striking images of the original, but sets them in his own mist-shrouded forests.

If you've seen Macbeth before, you'll recognise the beats: the prophecy, the ambition, the slow descent into paranoia. Seeing it shifted to feudal Japan changes the texture of the whole thing, and Mifune is a powerhouse in the lead. It's a great way to revisit a story you already know from a completely different angle.

The screening is at Harbour Lights Picturehouse, a two-screen cinema overlooking the marina in Ocean Village, Southampton (SO14 3TL). They run a broad mix of films — current blockbusters and family favourites alongside independent gems, cult classics and world cinema — and there's a bar and café on site for before or after the film. The session starts at 17:30 on Sunday 13 September.
