The Last Viking is now playing at Harbour Lights Picturehouse in Ocean Village, Southampton. It's a dark Nordic comedy starring Mads Mikkelsen and Paprika Steen, directed by Anders Thomas Jensen, who also wrote it. The two have worked together before, and this is another one of their collaborations.
The story follows Anker, a bank robber who needs to track down his brother, Manfred, to get hold of loot from a job they did years ago. There's a catch, though: Manfred is convinced he's John Lennon, and he's the only one who knows where the money is buried. It's that kind of setup — a bit absurd, a bit bleak, and very much in the vein of the dark humour Jensen is known for. If you've seen Riders of Justice, you'll recognise the same sort of tone: dry, slightly off-kilter, and not afraid to be a bit weird.
As for the venue, Harbour Lights Picturehouse is a two-screen cinema and bar in Ocean Village, overlooking the harbour. There's seating both inside and outside, and the bar does freshly brewed coffee, cakes, pizzas, toasties, wines, craft beers, ciders, and premium spirits. It's a pet-friendly spot, too, so you can bring your dog along if you fancy it. Beyond the usual screenings, they run a Kids' Club and Toddler Time programme, and they host special film seasons, Q&As, and arts events under the Picturehouse Presents banner. They also hire out the venue for private screenings and corporate events.
