Cinema screening of the science fiction thriller The Dog Stars, starring Jacob Elordi and Josh Brolin.
The Dog Stars is showing at Showcase Southampton on Wednesday 2 September. It's an R-rated science fiction thriller that runs 2 hours and 13 minutes, so you'll want to leave yourself plenty of time if you're heading home afterwards.
The story is set in the aftermath of a pandemic that's ravaged the world's population. A man lives a lonesome existence in a Colorado airplane hangar with his dog and a dour gunman he's befriended, until a mysterious transmission on the radio, picked up while he flies his old Cessna, sparks a hunt for the sound's provenance. It's a slow-burn setup that puts the isolation front and centre, and the Cessna flights give the whole thing a bit of scale.
The cast is a big one. Jacob Elordi leads, with Josh Brolin, Margaret Qualley, Guy Pearce, Allison Janney, Benedict Wong and Alara-Star Khan all in the mix. It's a fairly wide-ranging ensemble for a story that starts with a man, his dog, and a radio, so there's plenty of room to see how the world opens up as the hunt for that transmission takes hold.

One practical thing to keep in mind: the film carries a photosensitivity warning for flashing lights, so if that's something you need to be aware of, it's worth noting before you book. It's an R-rated title, and at 2 hours and 13 minutes, it's a proper sit-down for the evening.
