Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma

Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma is playing at Harbour Lights Picturehouse in Ocean Village, and it's running every day this week, so you've got plenty of slots to choose from. It's a horror film from nonbinary writer-director Jane Schoenbrun, who also wrote and directed I Saw The TV Glow.

The story follows Kris, a filmmaker chosen to direct a reboot of the Camp Miasma series, featuring the spear-wielding killer Little Death. To do it, Kris leaves behind her partner Mari and their polyamorous third wheel Thor and heads back to the abandoned summer camp where the original films were shot. Waiting there is Billy, a Norma Desmond-like recluse who starred in the first film. As for Little Death, the backstory is that they were drowned and made androgynous as a child by cruel campers.

Schoenbrun shot the whole thing in just 25 days. The film works through a hypersexualised, problematic subgenre of cinema from an LGBTQ lens, building on the ground they broke with I Saw The TV Glow. The cast includes Hannah Einbinder, Gillian Anderson, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Aren Buchholz and Jack Haven.

Harbour Lights is a two-screen cinema and bar in Ocean Village overlooking the harbour, with indoor and outdoor seating and dog-friendly screenings. The film is showing Friday at 17:30, Saturday at 18:30, Sunday at 20:10, Monday and Thursday at 18:00, Tuesday at 17:20, and Wednesday at 16:45. Child tickets are £3.
