National Theatre Live screening of Martin Crimp's The Misanthrope, directed by Indhu Rubasingham, with Sandra Oh in the title role.
Harbour Lights Picturehouse is screening The Misanthrope on Friday 2 October, as part of the National Theatre Live season. It's a filmed production of the National Theatre stage show, brought to the cinema screen for a one-off afternoon session. The play is Martin Crimp's razor-sharp reimagining of Molière's classic dark comedy, directed by Indhu Rubasingham.
At the centre is Alice, a brilliant novelist who despises the carefully constructed lies of modern society. It's a role played by Sandra Oh, who you'll probably recognise from Killing Eve. The play takes Molière's original premise and updates it for today, so it's less a museum piece and more a look at how we perform for each other in our own circles. Rubasingham directed the production and it was filmed live on stage at the National Theatre, which is what's being projected here.
Because it's a National Theatre Live screening, you're seeing the full stage production rather than a film made for the screen. It's a good way to catch a West End-scale show without having to make the trip to London, and since it's a one-off, it's a bit of a distinct event rather than something that'll be running for weeks. If you've followed Sandra Oh's work, this is a chance to see her in a lead theatre role.
