A cinema screening of the blockbuster exhibition on the artist James McNeill Whistler, one of the great innovators of 19th-century art.
Exhibition on Screen: James McNeill Whistler comes to Harbour Lights Picturehouse on Tuesday 29 September, bringing a blockbuster exhibition on the 19th-century artist to the cinema. It's a screening of a gallery show, so you get to see the work on the big screen without having to travel to the original exhibition.
Whistler was one of the great innovators of 19th-century art and a contemporary of the Impressionists, admired by the likes of Van Gogh and Manet. He was famously witty and experimental, championing 'art for art's sake'โthe idea that art doesn't need to tell a story or serve a moral purpose to be valuable. He gave his paintings titles like arrangements, harmonies and nocturnes, treating them more like musical compositions than traditional portraits or landscapes.
His most famous work, Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1 (1871), is better known as Whistler's Mother and has been called 'America's equivalent of the Mona Lisa'. That's the kind of thing the screening will be drawing onโthe work that made him a household name and the more experimental side that kept him pushing boundaries.
