A Private Life

A Private Life is screening at Harbour Lights Picturehouse on Wednesday 29 July, with the session starting at 14:00. It's the latest from director Rebecca Zlotowski, who follows up Other People's Children with this one, and it puts Jodie Foster in a French-language role.

Foster plays Lilian Steiner, a renowned psychiatrist who becomes deeply troubled and convinced that a patient's death was murder. That conviction is what drives the whole thing: rather than leaving it to the authorities, she mounts her own private investigation to get to the bottom of it. It's a role that takes her into a different language, and the story is built around that shift from professional distance to personal obsession.

She's not the only name on the bill, either. The film also stars Daniel Auteuil and Virginie Efira, so there's a strong French cast supporting her throughout. It runs 103 minutes, and it carries a 15 certificate, so it's definitely more of an adult drama than a light afternoon at the cinema.
