Concert by A Place To Bury Strangers, blending post-punk, noise-rock and shoegaze, performing tracks from their album 'Rare And Deadly'.
A Place To Bury Strangers play Papillon on Friday 4 September, their only Southampton date this autumn. They've been playing for close to two decades, pulling from post-punk, noise-rock, shoegaze, psychedelia and avant-garde. Frontman and guitarist Oliver Ackermann is also the founder of Death By Audio and the creator of signal-scrambling stomp boxes and instrument effects that other artists plug into, so the live show is built around the gear as much as the songs.
The set comes on the back of Rare And Deadly, a collection of demos, B-sides, abandoned experiments and forgotten fragments spanning 2015-2025, pulled from Ackermann's personal archive. It's a strange one: each format — CD, cassette, vinyl and digital — carries its own unique tracklisting, so no single version contains the complete album. Along with that, they recently put out Dead Inside, a distorted garage-rock track born of betrayal and unresolved heartbreak, which Ackermann describes as "fear, obsession, heartbreak, and rage all wrapped together."
In concert, the band describes the experience as shamanistic, full of glorious sound, crazed left turns, transcendent vibrations and real-time experiments. It's a loud, textural night that sits somewhere between a proper gig and a noise session, with the new material from Rare And Deadly and Dead Inside sitting alongside the older stuff. If you're into shoegaze or noise-rock, this is exactly the kind of thing they're known for.
