Screening of the classic 1968 science fiction film 2001: A Space Odyssey at Showcase Cinema de Lux.
2001: A Space Odyssey is coming to Showcase Cinema de Lux on Sunday 5 July. It's a one-day run of Stanley Kubrick's space epic, so if you've only ever seen it in clips or on a small screen, this is your chance to catch it in a proper cinema.
For those who haven't seen it, the film is a slow-burn journey that starts with the dawn of man and stretches out to the edges of the solar system, following a crew on a mission to Jupiter and their relationship with the ship's onboard computer, HAL 9000. It's a movie that takes its time, and that's exactly why it works best on the big screen. The long, silent sequences and the scale of the space travel are what it's built for, so seeing it in a cinema gives it the room it needs to breathe.

There are five screenings throughout the day, which makes it easy to fit in whenever suits you. The earliest is at 11:30, followed by 12:00, 14:30, 19:50, and a late one at 22:30. If you're coming from across town, the cinema is at Level 4, Westquay South, Southampton, SO15 1DE, right in the heart of the shopping centre. With the early morning, afternoon, evening, and late-night slots, you can pick a time that works for your day rather than having to build your whole Sunday around it. It's a long film, so if you're planning to see it and then head out, the 11:30 or 12:00 starts leave you the rest of the afternoon free.
