If you are looking for ways to keep the family entertained in Southampton this summer, there is plenty happening on the local stage. The Mayflower Theatre and MAST Mayflower Studios have lined up several family-friendly shows. One important detail to keep in mind is that the main Mayflower Theatre building on Above Bar Street is currently undergoing construction for a new extension, which is expected to finish by the end of summer 2026. Because of this, programming at the main theatre is paused from May to August 2026, and the scheduled performances, including the annual youth production, are taking place nearby in Studio 1 at MAST Mayflower Studios.

Among the highlights for July is the world premiere stage adaptation of Toto the Ninja Cat and the Great Snake Escape, running from 23 to 25 July 2026. Based on the children's book by Dermot O'Leary with illustrations by Nick East, this musical is designed for children aged 5 and over, featuring puppets, original music, and plenty of humour. Earlier in the month, from 8 to 11 July 2026, the amateur group SOS Presents Oklahoma! at Mayflower Studios. This production of the Rodgers & Hammerstein classic features well-known songs like "The Surrey with the Fringe on Top" and "People Will Say We're in Love," with tickets starting from £19.50 and a 10% discount available for groups of 10 or more in Zones A-C. Later in August, families can also catch The Lion Inside from 28 to 30 August 2026.
For young people interested in getting involved behind the scenes or on stage, there are several structured programmes running. The Summer Youth Project offers those aged 11 to 18 the chance to work with a professional creative team during a two-week rehearsal period in the school holidays, culminating in a performance. The fee for this project is £250, though free and subsidised places are available. There is also a Christmas Youth Production with rehearsals starting on Sundays from September, costing £300. For older youth aged 18 to 25 from lower-income households in Hampshire studying creative subjects, there are Higher Education Grants available, including Tuition Fee Grants of up to £3,000 and support awards.
