If you are looking for a night out at the theatre this autumn, a short trip over to Fareham might be just what you need. The newly opened arts and entertainment venue, Fareham Live, is hosting a major revival of Richard Harris's classic 1984 comedy, Stepping Out, from 15 to 19 September 2026. It is a great opportunity to support a fantastic regional venue while catching some very familiar faces on stage.

The story follows a group of amateur tap dancers who meet weekly in a church hall. This mix of quirky characters, including one lonely gentleman, are guided by their patient teacher and a rather grumpy pianist as they prepare for a charity gala. As they try to master the steps, the play dives into their personal lives, showing how friendships develop through shared struggles and plenty of laughs. This updated version is directed by Chris Jordan, with choreography by Alan Burkitt, who has extensive experience working on Strictly Come Dancing and has previously choreographed shows at Southampton's Mayflower Theatre.
What makes this production particularly interesting is its cast. Karen Hauer, a well-known professional dancer from Strictly Come Dancing, takes on the role of the dance teacher, Mavis. Joining her is Lucy Benjamin, widely recognised for her long-running role as Lisa Fowler in EastEnders. The cast also features Kerry Enright, Laura Tyrer, and Sophie-Louise Dann, making it a strong ensemble for this comedy-drama.
Fareham Live itself is a modern space worth visiting. Run by Trafalgar Entertainment, the venue features an 800-seat main auditorium, a secondary performance space, a dance studio, and a new bar and cafe area. It is located within easy reach for anyone living in the Southampton area looking for a fresh cultural option nearby. Tickets for the September run are already available.
