Steamship Shieldhall is a historic steam-powered passenger ship moored at 110 Berth, Southampton SO15 0HH. It is also used as a maritime museum, guided-tour venue and event space. The ship is part of the National Historic Fleet and is described as Britain’s largest working operational steam ship. It is run by volunteers, who lead visitors from the deck through the navigation areas and down to the engine room. That makes the experience more hands-on than a standard museum visit, with the ship’s machinery and working layout forming a big part of the attraction.

The vessel was laid down in October 1954, launched on 7 July 1955 and built by Lobnitz & Co. of Renfrew on the River Clyde. It served for 21 years before being laid up in 1976, and was later acquired for preservation by the Southampton Ship Trust. The restored saloon, updated galley and onboard speaker system are practical features for both public sailings and private events. During summer voyages, passengers can usually visit the Bridge and machinery spaces, while a Southampton Green Badge Guide provides commentary. Food and drink are available on board, with visitors noting that prices are cheaper than at many other venues.
The 2026 programme includes family-friendly two-hour Dock trips, three-hour Solent sailings timed around cruise-ship departures, music cruises and viewing trips connected with Cowes Week and the Round the Island Race. Longer return journeys to Portsmouth Harbour and the River Medina are also scheduled. The events calendar includes sea-shanty performances, with appearances from groups such as The Selsey Shantymen, The Southampton Salty Sea Dogs, The Kings Pond Shantymen, the Romsey Shanty Crew, and Jim Splice and The Main Brace. Children can also take part in a sticker collection during some activities.
For a private booking, the ship offers a setting with a clear maritime character rather than a conventional function room. It is best suited to people who want the vessel itself, its history and access to working ship spaces to be part of the occasion. The venue has a reported 4.9/5 rating from 171 reviews, although sailing dates, event details and access arrangements can vary, so checking the official website before travelling is sensible. The main source of information is ss-shieldhall.co.uk, and the ship’s listed location is in Southampton’s dock area.
