A Guide to Southampton's Summer Arts and Culture Scene

If you are looking for local plans over the summer, Southampton hosts a series of cultural activities and events across its key venues and public spaces. The city's cultural scene spans everything from world-class art galleries to major theatre venues, making it easy to find free or affordable entertainment right on our doorstep.

For art lovers, the Southampton City Art Gallery in the Civic Centre holds an extensive collection of over 5,000 works and remains free to enter. Current exhibitions running through the summer include British Surrealism and Beyond, which is open until 3 October 2026, alongside Emma Richardson – Levitate Me: Desire, Ecstasy and The Sublime, showing until 31 August 2026. Nearby, the John Hansard Gallery on Above Bar Street offers contemporary art exhibitions with free entry, while God's House Tower at Town Quay provides a space for arts and local heritage inside a 13th-century gatehouse.
