A new musical exploring the lives of country music legends Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash is heading to Southampton this autumn. Running from Tuesday 8 September to Saturday 12 September 2026, The Ballad of Johnny & June takes to the stage at the Mayflower Theatre on Commercial Road. Framed through the eyes of their son, John Carter Cash, the production dives into the pair's storied relationship, tracking everything from their initial 1956 meeting at the Grand Ole Opry and 1968 onstage proposal to the personal and professional hurdles of life on the road.

Directed by two-time Tony Award winner Des McAnuff (Jersey Boys), who also co-wrote the script with Robert Cary, the staging brings together a dedicated creative team alongside a live band. Christopher Ryan Grant stars as Johnny Cash, with Christina Bianco portraying June Carter Cash and Ryan O'Donnell playing John Carter Cash. The story is backed by a lineup of classic tracks including "I Walk the Line", "Ring of Fire", "Jackson", and "A Boy Named Sue", delivered alongside an ensemble cast and a six-piece live band on stage.
Ticket prices start at £29.50, with performance times spread across the five-day run. The production has an age guidance of 12+ due to adult themes and references to addiction. Discounts are available for Mayflower Theatre members, groups, and access members for select performances, though standard pricing applies to Friday and Saturday shows. Bookings can be made directly online or over the phone via the venue box office.
