Free talk and pub quiz on how swear words and slang vary across the UK, led by sociolinguist Dr Chris Montgomery and Modern Toss.
The UK Swear Map Pub Quiz takes over the Sheffield Tap on Thursday 29 October, from 7pm to 8.30pm. It's led by sociolinguist Dr Chris Montgomery and the comedy duo Modern Toss, and it's built around the UK Swear Map project, which looks at how swear words, slang and taboo phrases change across different regions, generations and social contexts.
The night is split into two halves: a talk followed by a pub quiz. The quiz draws on the project's early findings, so you'll get a sense of what they've been discovering about the way we swear before you're asked to put your own knowledge to the test. It's not just about listening, either — you can contribute your own expressions and try out the new interactive 'Swear Map' on the night.
The whole thing sits within the Festival of Social Science, an annual celebration of the social sciences funded by the Economic and Social Research Council and delivered by 41 partner institutions across the UK. This year's Sheffield programme centres on money, finance and the cost of living, and the city's festival runs from 17 to 31 October with interactive exhibitions, workshops, debates and games run by the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University. This is one of the more lighthearted entries in that line-up.
