A six-week youth flamenco dance series for children aged 8-11, teaching basic flamenco movements, rhythm and coordination through games and activities.
Northwest Flamenco Academy is bringing a youth flamenco series to Kerry Hall starting Saturday, October 10, and it's built for boys and girls aged 8 to 11. The classes run every Saturday through November 21, from 10 AM to 11 AM, with one break in the middle: there's no class on October 24. That makes it six sessions over six weeks, so it's a commitment, but it's a slow build rather than a one-off workshop.
Over those six weeks, the academy walks the kids through the basics of flamenco dance. They start with the foundation—how to position the body and how to move the hands and arms—and then move into the taconeos, the footwork where the feet act as percussion. It's not just drills, though; the sessions use games, movement activities, and listening exercises to introduce basic flamenco rhythms, so the kids get a feel for the music before they're expected to nail the steps. Along the way, they'll pick up Spanish and flamenco terms and phrases, too.
There's a bit more to it than just the dancing. The program is designed to work on fine and gross motor skills—coordination, memory, focus, body posture, and balance—so it's as much about physical development as it is about learning a new style. It's presented by Seattle Theatre Group in partnership with Northwest Flamenco Academy, and the classes are open to boys and girls in that 8-to-11 age range.
