A musical adaptation of Grace Lin's Newbery Honor Book, following a girl named Minli on a magical journey to find the Old Man on the Moon.
Seattle Children's Theatre brings Where the Mountain Meets the Moon to the Charlotte Martin Theatre at the Seattle Center from February 18 to March 14, 2027. It's part of their 2026-27 season, and it's a musical adaptation of Grace Lin's Newbery Honor book.
The story follows Minli, a girl living in the desolate valley of Fruitless Mountain. Her father fills her world with folktales of dragons, jewels, and the Old Man on the Moon, who is said to know the answers to all of life's questions. Determined to change her family's fortunes, Minli sets off to find him, and along the way she's joined by a friendly, flightless dragon and a cast of magical creatures. It's the kind of story that works for kids and adults alikeβa quest through a folklore-inspired world with a few strange companions for company.
Min Kahng wrote the book, music, and lyrics, and Alyza DelPan-Monley directs. The show runs about 80 minutes with a ten-minute intermission, and while it's recommended for all ages, the content is aimed at children ages seven and up. It's also offered as ASL interpreted, audio described, and sensory-friendly, so there are a few different ways to experience it depending on what you need. The production had its world premiere at Bay Area Children's Theatre back in early 2014, so it's been around a while before landing here in Seattle.
