A talk by conservator Nick Dorman celebrating 25 years of SAM's conservation department, with a tour of the conservation center.
Nick Dorman is taking the lead for the next Up Close with Conservators talk at the Seattle Asian Art Museum on Thursday, October 15, from 6 to 7:30 PM. The evening is a celebration of 25 years of SAM's conservation department, and it comes with a tour of the conservation center itself. If you've ever wondered what happens to a piece of art when it's not on the wall, this is exactly that.
Conservation is the stewardship of the artworks in the museum's care, and it's a job that pulls from science, art history, and the investigation of each individual object. SAM conserves across many mediums, and they do it from two different spaces: the Neukom Conservation Studio, the museum's first conservation studio, and the Atsuhiko and Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Conservation Center at the Seattle Asian Art Museum. That second one is a bit of a rarity — it's the only studio in the western US dedicated to the structural conservation of East Asian paintings.

Up Close with Conservators is a lecture series that brings the museum's conservation specialists together with members for an inside look at their work. The talk is the first half, and the tour follows, so you'll get to see where the work actually happens. The whole thing runs from 6 to 7:30 PM on Thursday, October 15, at the Seattle Asian Art Museum.
