Multimedia jazz concert by Lucian Ban and Mat Maneri, with a post-concert talk, at the Good Shepherd Center.
Lucian Ban and Mat Maneri bring their Transylvanian Dance jazz concert to the Good Shepherd Center on Friday, October 9, from 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM. The American Romanian Cultural Society presents it as part of Retracing Bartók - Reimagining the Béla Bartók Field Recordings, a project supported by The Tulipán Foundation.
The music is a reimagining of Béla Bartók's field recordings of Transylvanian folk songs, worked through improvisation. Ban and Maneri draw on two of their records for the set: Transylvanian Dance, their ECM duo album, and Transylvanian Folk Songs, an NPR Album of the Year that also featured woodwind player John Surman. The performance is multimedia, with video projections showing rare archival footage, audio from Bartók's original wax cylinder recordings, photographs he took in the field, and his handwritten manuscripts.
Ban is a Romanian-American pianist who grew up in northwest Transylvania; he moved to New York in 1999 and founded Jazz Unit in 1995. Maneri, born in Brooklyn in 1969, is the son of saxophonist Joe Maneri and took up the viola in 1998. The two first worked together in 2009 in the Enesco Re-Imagined octet, and their 2013 ECM duo album Transylvanian Concert won several Best Album of the Year awards. A post-concert talk follows the performance.
