A concert by the Canadian bluegrass and folk trio The Wailin' Jennys, known for their three-part harmonies and ethereal sound.
The Wailin' Jennys play Benaroya Hall on Sunday, May 9, 2027, at 7 PM. The trio consists of Nicky Mehta, Ruth Moody, and Heather Masse, and their sound is built around three-part harmonic vocals and mandolin. They describe it as the soundtrack of late-summer, early-fall evenings.
The band started as a happy accident when three solo singer-songwriters got together for a one-time performance at a tiny guitar shop in Winnipeg, Manitoba. From there, they grew into one of the most beloved international folk acts working today, with sold-out concerts from coast to coast. All three are classically trained: soprano Ruth Moody is a vocalist and pianist; mezzo Nicky Mehta is a dancer; and alto Heather Masse graduated from the New England Conservatory Jazz Voice program.
Their 2004 debut, 40 Days, won a 2005 Juno Award for Roots & Traditional Album of the Year, and they became frequent guests on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion. Firecracker followed in 2006, winning a 2007 Folk Alliance Award and spending over 56 weeks on the Billboard charts. 2011's Bright Morning Stars, produced by Mark Howard, took home another Juno. Their 2017 record Fifteen was their first in six years and the first to include cover songs requested by fans.
