Swedish folk musician The Tallest Man on Earth performs with Andrea Von Kampen at The Crocodile, presented by KEXP & The Crocodile.
The Tallest Man on Earth plays The Crocodile on Thursday, November 5, with Andrea Von Kampen opening. The show is presented by KEXP and The Crocodile, and it's for ages 21+.
For nearly twenty years, The Tallest Man on Earth has been the stage name of Swedish singer-songwriter Kristian Matsson, who built his reputation around the American folk tradition. His latest album, Just Beyond Endless Mountain, which came out October 9 on Anti- Records, turns that perspective on its head. After returning to his native Dalarna in central Sweden, Matsson drew on the polskas, old field recordings, and local traditions of his childhood, reshaping his melodies, voice, and songwriting around them.
He grew up in Vålarna during the 1980s and '90s, surrounded by fiddlers and folk dancers. He also credits Bob Dylan as an influence, who opened a window to the kind of scratchy field recordings that eventually drew Dylan back to his own sources. That same pull toward old recordings is what Matsson returned to for this record, trading the American folk lens he'd worked in for the Swedish traditions he grew up with.
