Woodblock printmaking session with artist Fulgencio Lazo followed by an artist talk with Shinzaburo Takeda and Lazo.
The Studio at SAM is hosting a woodblock printmaking session at the Seattle Art Museum on Thursday, October 29, from 4 to 8 PM. The evening is split into two parts: from 4 to 6:30 PM, artist Fulgencio Lazo leads a woodblock printmaking session, and at 6:30 PM, an artist talk follows with Shinzaburo Takeda and Lazo, moderated by Dr. Lauro Flores. Both parts are drop-in and first-come, first-served, so you don't need to register in advance.
There's a deep connection between the two artists. Shinzaburo Takeda, born in Seto, Japan, in 1935, is a renowned Japanese-Mexican painter and printmaker who has lived in Mexico for over sixty years. He's one of Oaxaca's most important contemporary artists and has trained many indigenous Zapotec and Mixtec artists. The National Biennale of Graphic Arts Shinzaburo Takeda, established in 2008, is held in his honor. Fulgencio Lazo, born in El Paraiso, Oaxaca, in 1966, is a Zapotec artist known for his joyful, whimsical prints and paintings. He trained as a printmaker under Takeda and has had more than 50 solo shows, represented by Seattle's ArtX Contemporary. Dr. Lauro Flores has been a professor at the University of Washington for many years and wrote Fulgencio Lazo: Reconstruction of Memory.
