Open-mic storytelling competition where anyone can share a true, personal story on the night's theme.
The Moth StorySLAM returns to the Fremont Abbey Arts Center on Friday, October 16, as part of the city's regular storytelling circuit. If you've never been, the format is an open-mic competition: anyone can sign up to share a true, personal story on the night's theme, or you can just sit back and listen. The stories are five minutes each, and they're told live on stage. The Moth is a world-renowned storytelling organization and a top arts podcast heard on NPR, and the StorySLAM is the live competition that feeds it. In Seattle, it's one of the signature bookings of Abbey Arts Presents, the nonprofit that runs a network of the city's historic venues, including Ballard Homestead, Woodlawn Hall, and St. Mark's Cathedral.
There's a different theme for every show, and the content isn't vetted or previewed, so the night can include adult language from the storytellers and the hosts. The Abbey itself is a converted church in the Fremont neighborhood, and the room's intimate, seated setting works well for storytelling. Most dates sell out at least two weeks in advance, and free volunteer spots are offered for those who want to help out. The Moth is a regular fixture here, with a new theme each time.
