A rock and alternative night featuring The Cosmic Neighborhood, King Youngblood and The Detractors at Hidden Hall.
King Youngblood headlines Hidden Hall on Wednesday, October 14, with The Cosmic Neighborhood and The Detractors opening the night. It's a three-band bill, and the opening act is a local one: The Cosmic Neighborhood is a six-piece from Seattle that blends Brazilian and Western sounds. They describe their music as a modern take on tropicália, the psychedelic and politically progressive movement that emerged in Brazil in the 1960s, and they place their sound at the intersection of indie pop and that tropicalia influence.
With six members on stage, there's enough room for the Brazilian elements to hold their own alongside the indie pop side of things, rather than one just coloring the other. The tropicália they're drawing from was as much about politics as it was about music, and that psychedelic, boundary-crossing spirit is what they're bringing to the bill. It's a Seattle band playing a sound that reaches back to a very specific moment in Brazilian history, and they're doing it as a full ensemble.
