Screening of The Blair Witch Project followed by a live Q&A with original cast members Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams.
The Blair Witch Project is coming to The 5th Avenue Theatre on Sunday, October 11, for a screening and a live Q&A. The night is presented by Seattle Theatre Group, and it's part of a rare limited-engagement tour that brings the original cast back together on stage.
If you haven't seen it, The Blair Witch Project (1999) is a found-footage horror movie about three student filmmakers who disappear while documenting a local legend in the Maryland woods. The whole thing is told through their recovered footage, shot over eight days on a shoestring budget. It became a cultural phenomenon thanks to its raw realism, improvised dialogue, and a groundbreaking viral marketing campaign that blurred fiction and reality—the campaign famously listed the actors as 'deceased' or 'missing' and leaned on the early internet to sell the hoax. Beyond the stunt, the film works because it plays on the idea that what you don't see is far more terrifying than any monster special effect.
After the screening, the original cast—Heather Donahue, Joshua Leonard, and Michael C. Williams—come out on stage to share behind-the-scenes stories and answer audience questions. All three are still alive and well, which is a nice contrast to the 'missing' posters the movie used to build its mystery. It's a chance to hear how they actually pulled it off from the people who were there.
