Jazz concert featuring vibraphonist Stefon Harris and his ensemble Blackout, blending soul, funk and jazz.
Stefon Harris & Blackout play Dimitriou's Jazz Alley on Tuesday, October 13, and Wednesday, October 14. Both nights start at 7:30 PM, with doors opening at 6 PM. Harris is a four-time Grammy nominee and a long-standing figure in contemporary jazz, and this show blends soul-funk and jazz, with Harris on vibraphone and marimba backed by an ensemble.
If you're not familiar with his records, Sonic Creed was named Jazz Album of the Year by WBGO, and Urbanus earned a Grammy nomination. He's also just released Sonic Creed II: Life Signs. The Jazz Journalists Association has named him Best Mallet Player eight times, and DownBeat Magazine's Critics Poll voted him Best Vibes Player. He's picked up the Doris Duke Artist Award and the Martin E. Segal Award from Lincoln Center along the way.
Beyond the stage, Harris has spent a good part of his career in the classroom. He's taught at universities around the world, led curriculum development at the Brubeck Institute, served on the jazz faculty at New York University, and was Associate Dean and Director of Jazz Arts at Manhattan School of Music. That background in teaching sits alongside the recording and performing.
