Gothic mystery improv comedy show in which performers weave chilling, Poe-inspired tales from the audience's eerie suggestions.
Poe Unexpected is running at the Unexpected Productions Market Theater on Friday and Saturday nights, part of the company's Halloween Improv Shows collection. It's an improv comedy show built around the work of Edgar Allan Poe, and since it's improv, the audience gets to help shape the night. The performers draw on Poe's darkest stories and on eerie suggestions from the crowd to weave chilling, gothic, and twisted tales, blending macabre mystery with sharp wit.
Unexpected Productions describes it as "a spine-tingling night of Poe-inspired improv, where laughter and darkness collide," and they frame the whole thing as an invitation to step into the shadows and uncover the lost tales of Edgar Allan Poe. The setup is classic improv: the cast takes a prompt from the room and builds a scene around it on the fly, so no two nights end up the same. If you've read Poe, you'll recognize the gothic mood he's known for; if you haven't, it's a good way to get a taste of it without having to sit through a full anthology on your own.

The theater is at 1428 Post Alley in Pike Place Market, right by the Gum Wall, so it's easy to find if you're already hanging around the market. Shows run Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $15, and free or reduced-cost access is provided with support from 4Culture, which is worth keeping in mind if you're on a budget. Between the Poe theme and the Halloween collection it belongs to, it's a solid pick for a night out this October.
