A hauntingly hilarious improv comedy show that blends gothic mystery, audience suggestions and Seattle laughs, drawing on Edgar Allan Poe's darkest works.
Poe Unexpected is running at the Unexpected Productions Market Theater on Friday, October 9, as part of a series that plays Fridays and Saturdays throughout October. It's an improvised comedy show built around Edgar Allan Poe, and the whole thing is made up on the spot.
The format is simple: the performers pull from Poe's darkest works and the eerie prompts they get from the audience to weave chilling, gothic, and twisted tales. They mix macabre mystery with razor-sharp wit, so the mood shifts between the genuinely creepy and the flat-out funny. Since it's improv, no two nights are the sameβwhat the audience feeds them determines where the stories go.
It's put on by Unexpected Productions, which has been a cornerstone of Seattle's improv scene since 1982. They're best known for Theatresports, the city's longest-running show, and they describe themselves as Seattle's home for improv and creativity. The Market Theater itself is tucked behind the Gum Wall in Pike Place Market, so you're right in the middle of the Market.
