Grammy-nominated guitarist Ottmar Liebert and his band Luna Negra perform their border-style flamenco and world music at the intimate Dimitriou's Jazz Alley.
Ottmar Liebert and his band Luna Negra play Dimitriou's Jazz Alley from Thursday, Oct 8 through Sunday, Oct 11. Liebert is a five-time Grammy nominee born in Cologne, Germany, who picked up the guitar at 11. After a stint playing rock in Boston, he settled in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he built a signature style blending Spanish, Mexican and world elements, with strong melodies tinged with melancholy and upbeat rhythms. He formed the first incarnation of Luna Negra in 1989.
His debut album began as a self-produced release called Marita: Shadows and Storms, recorded for less than $3,000 in a shack beside a gravel pit; it became the best-selling instrumental acoustic guitar album of all time and established his border-style flamenco. He's since released 33 classic albums and played more than two thousand concerts worldwide. Along with bassist Jon Gagan, he's also played two concerts with the New Mexico Philharmonic that broke attendance records for the orchestra.
For this run, Liebert is joined by Luna Negra: Jon Gagan on electric bass guitar and acoustic upright bass, and Robby Rothschild on drums and percussion. They'll be playing at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley, a family-run Seattle room that's been booking jazz since 1979, with an intimate layout that keeps every seat within 50 feet of the stage.
