Electronic and bass music artist Opiuo performs live at The Shop in Seattle.
Opiuo plays The Shop on Friday, December 18, at 9 PM. If you're not familiar, Opiuo is a New Zealand-born electronic and bass music artist who now calls Australia home. He's a one-man show on stage, working with drum machines and synths, though he also tours with The Opiuo Band.
He's built a solid track record in the electronic scene. He's performed alongside MC Hammer and Bassnectar, and his tracks have hit number one on Beatport, Addictech, and iTunes. His album Slurp And Giggle earned a nomination for Best Dance/Electronic Release at the Australian Independent Music Awards and became the most downloaded album of 2010 on addictech.com. He's also worked as a remixer for Infected Mushroom and Kaya Project, and his music has found its way onto BBC Radio One and Triple J, with compilations curated by BT.
That background—the bass music, the chart-topping singles, the remix work—gives you a good sense of where he sits. It's electronic music with a heavy lean toward the bass end of the spectrum, and seeing it live as a one-man show means you're watching him run the machines and synths himself rather than a full band. If you've followed the bass scene for a while, his name has probably come up before; if not, this is a good place to start.
