Northwest Orchid Society member meeting with a presentation by Satomi from Seed Engei on Neofinetia falcata.
Satomi from Seed Engei is the guest speaker for the Northwest Orchid Society member meeting on Monday, October 12, at the Center for Urban Horticulture in Seattle. The presentation focuses on Neofinetia falcata, a species of orchid native to East Asia that's grown as a prized plant in Japan for centuries. If you've spent any time around orchid collectors, you've probably heard the nameβit's a species known for its fragrant flowers and a long history of specialized cultivation.
This is one of the society's regular monthly meetings, which they hold on the second Monday of each month, except July and August. The meetings usually run from around 7 PM to 9 PM and combine a guest speaker's program with orchid exhibits, plant raffles, and sales. There's also one special auction each year. It's a steady rhythm for the group, with a different focus every month, so this particular session on Neofinetia falcata is just one stop in their full season.
Beyond these meetings, the Northwest Orchid Society puts on a couple of larger events. They stage the annual Indoor Plant Festival, which serves as both a show and a fundraiser, and they're also behind the 2026 Fall Conservatory Show at the Volunteer Park Conservatory. If you're into orchids, those are the bigger dates to keep on your radar throughout the year.
