Open house for prospective docents to learn about training and hear from current docents; free with RSVP.
The Seattle Art Museum is holding a New Docent Open House at the Seattle Asian Art Museum on Wednesday, October 14, from 4 to 5 PM. It's an hour for anyone interested in becoming a docent to get a sense of what the role actually looks like and how the training works.
If you're not familiar with the term, docents are the museum's trained volunteer guides. They work across all three SAM sites, leading tours for the public, for schools, and for private groups. During the school day, they lead tours for K-12 youth; they also run public and private tours for adult audiences. Beyond the tours, they lead thought-provoking walks and help the museum connect art to life. It's a role that puts you directly in front of the public, talking about the collections and helping people make their own connections to the work.
At the open house, you'll hear from current docents who can talk about what they love about volunteering at SAM and what the day-to-day is like. It's a good chance to ask the practical questions—how much time it takes, what the training involves, and what the commitment looks like—before you decide to sign up. If you've ever wanted to spend more time with the art and share it with others, this is the place to start.
