Concert by trombonist Naomi Moon Siegel, who fuses folk melodies with fantastical soundscapes and tight grooves, as part of the What's Going On Festival.
Naomi Moon Siegel plays The Royal Room on Saturday, November 21, at 7:30 PM. She's a trombonist from Missoula, Montana, and her playing sits at a cross-section of folk melodies, fantastical soundscapes, and tight grooves that pull from indie-folk, pop, and jazz. She performs both as a soloist with loops and electronics and in small ensembles.
Her debut album, Shoebox View, came out in June 2016 and drew acclaim from Downbeat Magazine, Jazziz, and allaboutjazz.com. That record gives you a good sense of where she's coming from: the folk influence is there in the melodies, and the loops and electronics build out the soundscapes she's known for.
The concert is part of the third annual 'What's Going On Festival,' presented by South Hudson Music Project, a series that looks at jazz and contemporary music rooted in the Chicago, New York, St. Louis, and Los Angeles of the late 20th century. This year's edition is a deep dive into New York City in the 1980s and the Downtown Scene—a cross-pollination of free jazz, Black creative music, rock, punk, and experimental and electronic music. Siegel's work, which blends folk with electronic textures and jazz grooves, fits right into that conversation.
