Hip-hop concert featuring Lyrics Born, Nathan Nzanga's Upleft, Triple Nickel, and DJ Indica Jones at Hidden Hall.
Lyrics Born plays Hidden Hall on Saturday, October 10, with Nathan Nzanga's Upleft, Triple Nickel, and DJ Indica Jones opening. Lyrics Born is the stage name of Tom Shimura, a Bay Area rapper and producer who got his start at UC Davis in the late 1990s after discovering hip-hop on KDVS college radio. He began freestyling with classmates in 1993, and his track "Send Them" became the first single on Solesides Records, the label that brought together Blackalicious, DJ Shadow, and Lateef The Truthspeaker.
In 1997, Shimura and Gift of Gab released The Album as Latyrx, a certified classic that sold 100,000 copies. Solesides was reimagined as Quannum Projects in 1999, and Shimura remains a co-owner. Through the label, he released Later That Day in 2003, and its single "Callin' Out" became his biggest commercial hit. He's billed as the first Asian-American solo rapper to play Lollapalooza, Coachella, Outside Lands, and Jimmy Kimmel Live. His 2024 album Goodbye, Sticky Rice includes the single "Take It 2 Far."
