Kishi Bashi performs his Sonderlust 10th Anniversary Tour, with Geographer, at The Crocodile.
Kishi Bashi plays The Crocodile on Saturday, October 11, with Geographer opening. It's part of the Sonderlust 10-Year Anniversary Tour, and the whole point of the night is that he's playing the album Sonderlust in full.
That album came out a decade ago, and the story behind it is one worth knowing if you're going to hear it from start to finish. Kishi Bashi wrote it coming out of a period of creative and personal exhaustion. Up until then, his sound was built on ornate violin loops; Sonderlust was the moment he stepped away from that and moved toward vintage synths, warmer textures, and a more open vulnerability. Hearing the record in its original sequence lets you trace that shift from the first track to the last.
There's a new anniversary edition of the album out through Joyful Noise Recordings that gives you a bit more to chew on before the show. It adds two previously unreleased B-sides, "Comin' To You" and "Harpsi Chords," and includes demos of all ten album tracks, so you can hear how the songs sounded before they were finished. The cover is a reimagined version by artist Ssin Kim. The tour itself got moving at Treefort Music Fest and Big Ears Festival before heading across the country.
