A play by Kimberly Belflower about an AP English class in rural Georgia that confronts gender and power.
John Proctor Is the Villain opens at the Bagley Wright Theater on January 21, 2027, and runs through February 21. It's a play by Kimberly Belflower, directed by Jess McLeod, with Lilla Crawford playing Shelby Holcomb. The production is a co-production between Seattle Rep, San Francisco's American Conservatory Theater, and Los Angeles' Center Theatre Group.
The story is set in a rural Georgia high school, following an AP English class that's diving into the drama that made "witch hunt" a household phrase. As the students start to question the play, the parallels between the literature and their own lives become uncomfortably real, building toward a confrontation with gender, power, and who gets to control the narrative. Belflower describes it as an explosive coming-of-age story, and the whole thing centers young voices.
It's a bold artistic collaboration, with three of the nation's leading regional theaters joining forces to bring it to the West Coast. The run starts with preview performances from January 21 to 26, and opening night is January 27. After that, it continues through February 21.
