Earshot Jazz presents a tribute to Charles Mingus with Skerik and the Seattle Jazz Orchestra, a 7-piece ensemble.
Skerik leads a tribute to Charles Mingus at Hidden Hall on Sunday, October 25. The show is presented by Earshot and is titled Jelly Roll Soul: the music of Charles Mingus. It's a seven-piece ensemble built around the players' longtime devotion to Mingus, the bassist, pianist, and composer.
Skerik takes the lead on tenor and baritone sax, and he's a Seattle stalwart who describes himself as a risk-taker. His career spans more than forty years and over two hundred records, with collaborations including John Medeski, Marc Ribot, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Jeff Parker, Ani DiFranco, and Nikki Glaspie. He's known as much for his electronics work as for his horn playing, a double life that earned him the nickname 'saxophonics.'
He shares the front of the stage with Mike Stone on drums, and the rest of the ensemble fills out the sound: Hans Teuber on alto sax and flute, Greg Sinibaldi on baritone and tenor sax, Tim Kennedy on keys, Geoff Harper on bass, and Jason Cressey on trombone. With three saxophones and a trombone, the horn section carries a lot of the weight.
