Concert by the rock band Imperial Teen at The Barboza, presented by Barboza and KEXP, for ages 21 and over.
Imperial Teen play The Barboza on Saturday, October 17, with doors opening at 6:30 PM. The show is presented by Barboza and KEXP, and it's for ages 21 and over.
If the name doesn't ring a bell, the band's history explains a good bit of the sound. They formed in San Francisco in 1995 around Roddy Bottum, the keyboardist who had left Faith No More, and bandmates Lynn Perko, Jone Stebbins and Will Schwartz. Their music is built on crunchy guitar riffs and classic boy-girl harmonies, a combination that landed them a record deal with London/Universal and their 1997 album Seasick. Critics at the time praised it for its infectious pop grooves, and it arrived right as the grunge era was winding down. They followed it up with What Is Not To Love in 1999.
That's the core of the band: Bottum on keys, Perko and Stebbins on vocals and guitar, and Schwartz on bass. The boy-girl harmonies are a big part of the thing, and the guitar work keeps it from leaning too far into the pop side. It's a sound that fits right in with the late-90s indie-pop scene, and they've kept that same lineup and approach since the beginning.
