True Blues brings the living culture of the blues with Corey Harris and Cedric Watson, presented by Town Hall Seattle and SAMA: Music + Art.
Corey Harris and Cedric Watson play The Great Hall on Friday, November 6, as part of the Global Rhythms series presented by Town Hall Seattle and SAMA: Music + Art. They're calling the evening True Blues, and the whole thing is built around the living culture of the blues rather than just the history of it.
Harris is a guitarist who started as a street musician in New Orleans and later lived in Cameroon, performing around the world. He's also a MacArthur Fellowship grant recipient for his study of the blues' African roots, so he brings a deep, scholarly interest to the stage alongside his playing. Watson is a fiddler, singer, accordionist, and songwriter with four Grammy nominations to his name. He pulls from a wide family tree—African, French, Native American, and Spanish—and works that into a repertoire of Zydeco melodies, fiddle tunes, and powerhouse vocals. Together they're tracing the roots and soul of the American blues.
The show starts at 7:30 PM, but there's plenty to do before the music kicks in. Lobby doors open at 6:00 PM, and pre-show food and drinks from local vendors start then, so you can grab a bite and a drink and hang out for a while before the hall opens for seating at 7:00 PM. If you can't make it downtown, the performance is available by livestream as well as in person.
