The Georgian National Ballet Sukhishvili performs its 80th anniversary celebration at The Moore Theatre.
Sukhishvili Georgian National Dance Company comes to The Moore Theatre on Sunday, October 18, as part of their 80th anniversary tour. They're bringing 40 dancers and a traditional quintet orchestra, so the music is live on stage rather than recorded.
If the name doesn't ring a bell, it's because they're Georgia's first professional state dance company. Founded in 1945 by Iliko Sukhishvili and Nino Ramishvili, they've performed in more than 90 countries and played for over 50 million people. The company is still a family affair, run today by the founders' third-generation relatives. Their style blends traditional Georgian dance with classical ballet, and this particular tour marks eight decades of that work.
Seattle is one stop on a wider run that includes Carnegie Hall in New York City, so this isn't a one-off visit. The Moore Theatre, where they'll be performing, is the city's oldest active theater, dating back to 1907. Between the company's 80 years and the theater's 119, there's a fair bit of history on the bill.
