Concert by the Seattle indie pop band Fruit Juice, with support from Russian Blue and Ghost Fetish.
Fruit Juice play Hidden Hall on Friday, November 27, with Russian Blue and Ghost Fetish opening. It's a Seattle band, so this is a hometown show for them, and they've put out a full-length album and two EPs on Swoon Records.
If you've heard them before, you know the songs sit on a pop backdrop that draws from Kate Bush, of Montreal and Brian Eno. It's a bright, melodic sound, but there's a strange edge to it. Much of that comes from frontman Jake McCaffray's writing, which often works from a wide-eyed, alien-come-human perspective. It's the kind of thing that's given music critics a tendency to invent supernatural origin stories for the band—they're not exactly a straightforward indie-pop act.
That theatrical streak carries over to the stage. Their live shows are known for strange glam and a certain sense of performance, so it's more of a production than a standard four-piece standing in a line. Between the pop hooks and the costumes, there's a lot to take in.
