Screening of the 1983 documentary Frida, naturaleza viva by Paul Leduc, presented by Seattle Opera, the Seattle Latino Film Festival and SIFF.
SIFF Film Center is screening Frida, naturaleza viva on Tuesday, October 13, as part of a collaboration between the Seattle Opera, the Seattle Latino Film Festival, and SIFF. The film is Frida, Still Life, directed by Paul Leduc in 1983, and it's widely considered Leduc's most critically acclaimed work.
It's a portrait of the Mexican painter Frida Kahlo, and not a straightforward one. Leduc takes a highly expressionist and lyrical approach, which means it's less of a traditional biopic and more of a cinematic impression of her life and work. If you're already familiar with Kahlo's paintings, you'll recognize a lot of that same spirit in the way the film is put together.
Because it's a collaboration between the Seattle Opera and the Seattle Latino Film Festival, the screening sits at a bit of a crossroads between the city's opera and Latino film communities. It's a chance to see a piece of Mexican cinema that's held up over the decades, brought to the screen by three local organizations working together.
