Electronic music performance by Emancipator, a downtempo artist known for blending hip-hop, world music, jazz, folk and classical influences, with support from Shrimpnose.
Emancipator plays Substation on Saturday, November 21, with support from Shrimpnose. The show starts at 10 PM.
Emancipator is the stage name of Douglas Appling, a classically trained violinist from Portland, Oregon, who's been a fixture in the electronic scene since his 2006 debut album, Soon It Will Be Cold Enough. He doesn't just run a laptop on stage; he performs live with his full band, the Emancipator Ensemble. His production pulls from a wide range of international cultures and musical genres, and that organic approach is a good way to describe what you'll hear.
In 2017, he released Baralku through his own label, Loci Records. He describes the record as a hybrid of downtempo hip-hop, world music, jazz, folk, and classical, and says it was inspired by the astral island some aboriginal societies call their spiritual home after death. Substation bills him as a downtempo master bringing immersive sonic landscapes to the stage.
