Concert by the jazz-hip-hop duo DOMi & JD Beck at the intimate Neumos venue in Seattle.
DOMi & JD Beck play Neumos on Monday, October 5. It's a duo that's hard to pin down: DOMi Louna is a French-born keyboardist and former saxophone prodigy; JD Beck is a Texas native and drummer. Together they play a virtuosic, improvisational style that pulls from jazz, hip-hop, and electronic music, and they're known for doing it as a pair.
Their debut album, NOT TiGHT, came out through Blue Note Records in partnership with Anderson .Paak's APESHIT, Inc. label and earned them two Grammy nominations, including Best New Artist. The follow-up, WHO ASKED?, is a different kind of record: an orchestral, fully written-out work recorded mostly at their home studio in Dallas. They brought in a handful of contributors for it, including Zach Hill, Domi's brother NoƩ Degalle, and .Paak himself. The two of them sing on nearly every track, with lyrics drawn from a film script they wrote but never shot.
