Grammy Award-winning roots rock and Americana artist Dave Alvin performs his new and old songs with special guests at Tractor Tavern.
Dave Alvin plays Tractor Tavern on Wednesday, October 14, with Chris Miller and special guest Christy McWilson. The bill is titled New and Old Songs, which tells you exactly what to expect: a set that pulls from his recent work and the older material he's been playing for years.
Alvin is a Grammy Award-winning songwriter, singer, and producer who calls himself a barroom guitarist. He's widely seen as a pioneer of Americana, and he's been at it for a long time. A fourth-generation Californian from Downey, he formed the roots rock and R&B band The Blasters with his brother Phil in 1979, then launched a solo career after 1986. His writing draws on blues, folk, rockabilly, Bakersfield country, surf, and garage rock, with lyrics that take cues from writers like Raymond Chandler and John Steinbeck. Other songwriters have recorded his songs, including Los Lobos, Dwight Yoakam, James McMurtry, and Nanci Griffith, and his music has appeared in shows like The Sopranos, The Wire, and True Blood.
He's kept busy with a few different projects over the years. He reunited with Phil on the Grammy-nominated blues album Common Ground, led the psych super-group The Third Mind, and recorded with Jimmie Dale Gilmore on 2024's TexCali. In 2022 he published the book New Highway. He was honored in 2023 with The Chris Strachwitz Legacy Award from The Arhoolie Foundation and in 2024 with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association. He performs with his band, The Guilty Ones.
