Dance Theatre of Harlem performs its signature works including the revival of 'Firebird' at the Paramount Theatre as part of the Seattle Theatre Group series.
Dance Theatre of Harlem comes to the Paramount Theatre on Friday, October 30, and Saturday, October 31, as part of Seattle Theatre Group's 2026/27 Performing Arts Series. The program brings together three works: Passage of Being, Return, and Firebird.
Firebird is the one that'll be most familiar. It's a signature piece for the company, and they're reviving it here. The New York Times once wrote that it sends audiences into "a whooping spell of delirium" in a way other versions don't, so that's the one to keep an eye on.
There's a good bit of history behind the company, too. Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook founded Dance Theatre of Harlem in 1969, and by 1971 The New York Times was calling it "one of ballet's most exciting undertakings." Mitchell started the school shortly after the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., driven by a desire to give children—especially those in Harlem—the chance to learn dance and the allied arts. Now in its sixth decade, it's grown into a multicultural institution with a professional company, the Dancing Through Barriers arts-education program, and extensive community engagement.
