Talk with journalists Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco discussing their graphic novel 'Requiem for Gaza' at Town Hall Seattle.
Chris Hedges and Joe Sacco are coming to Town Hall Seattle on Monday, October 12, for a talk centered on Requiem for Gaza, their second collaboration. It's a conversation between two people who approach the same story from opposite ends of the page: Hedges, the journalist, and Sacco, the cartoonist.
The book comes from a trip the two took to Cairo in the spring of 2025, where they interviewed 29 Palestinian families who had recently left Gaza. The project is built on those first-hand accounts, and the book pairs Sacco's visceral imagery with Hedges' prose, alternating between comics and single images. The talk itself runs about 75 minutes and is offered both in-person and by livestream.
If you aren't familiar with them, Hedges is a journalist, cultural critic, and former foreign correspondent for The New York Times from 1990 to 2005. He was part of the team that won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for Explanatory Reporting and has written American Fascists, Empire of Illusion, and War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning. Sacco is a Maltese-born cartoonist and journalist based in Portland, a seminal figure in comics journalism who helped establish the form's seriousness in the 1990s with Palestine. He's an American Book Award winner and received an honorary Doctor of Literature from the University of Malta in 2023.
