Duo Alex Hamburger and José Luiz Martins present their debut album Catalog of Dreams, blending Brazilian, jazz and classic American songbook influences.
Alex Hamburger and José Luiz Martins are bringing their debut album, Catalog of Dreams, to The Royal Room on Monday, October 19. It's an album release show, so the set will be built around the new record, and the two of them will be the only ones on stage.
Hamburger is a Seattle-based flutist and vocalist, and Martins is a pianist and keyboardist. Together they're working across a few different traditions at once: Brazilian music, jazz, and the classic American songbook. The performance draws from Catalog of Dreams, and the set mixes reimagined works with original compositions, so you'll hear things they've written alongside pieces they've taken from other places and worked over. They describe their live shows as being built on an interactive approach and captivating interplay, which is a good way of saying they're listening to each other as much as they're playing. It's an exploratory experience for jazz fans, and since it's just the two of them, there isn't much to hide behind.

The Royal Room is in Columbia City, at 5000 Rainier Avenue South in the Rainier Valley. The show starts at 4:30 PM, which is a bit earlier than your usual jazz set, so it's more of a late-afternoon thing than a late-night one. Tickets start at $25.
